Dr. Peter Hansen is a leading interventional cardiologist specializing in coronary and valvular heart disease. Based at the North Shore Campus, he serves patients at both Royal North Shore and North Shore Private Hospitals.

Dr Stephen Vernon - Interventional Cardiologist

Dr Stephen Vernon

Dr Stephen Vernon is a Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist. He is a Staff Specialist Interventional Cardiologist at Royal North Shore Hospital and a VMO at North Shore Private Hospital.

Dr Vernon is passionate about providing personalised care to his patients and has particular expertise in coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, CT coronary angiography, echocardiography, and stress echocardiography. He consults in all aspects of cardiology including: coronary artery disease, cardiovascular risk assessment, valvular heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias.

Dr Vernon graduated from the University of Sydney with degrees in Medicine and Medical Science, before completing pre-vocational training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and physician and interventional cardiology training at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney.

In addition to his clinical role, Dr Vernon is an active clinician researcher and medical educator. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. His research has been published in over 45 peer reviewed journal articles including publications in high impact journals, The Lancet, Circulation and the European Heart Journal. His PhD studies investigated clinical outcomes of heart attack patients without traditional risk factors and novel biomarkers of coronary artery disease. He has also completed a post-doctoral fellowship through the University of Sydney’s Kolling Institute supported by a Heart Foundation Fellowship.

Dr Vernon works on the North Shore Hospital Campus daily and is therefore able to accommodate urgent reviews at the Northern Heart Centre and cardiology admissions to North Shore Private Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dr Hadi Nojoumian - Adult Cardiologist & General Physician

Dr Hadi Nojoumian

Dr Hadi Nojoumian is an Cardiologist and General Physician. He specialises in rural medicine and has research interests in acute coronary syndrome and right ventricular function assessments. Dr Nojoumian completed his training at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a member of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound Medicine. Dr Amir Hadi Nojoumian practices in Armidale, St Leonards and Lindfield.

He is also currently working as a Senior Lecturer in General Medicine at the School of Rural Medicine, the University of New England where he primarily teaches internal medicine and cardiology, being a senior lecturer at The University of New England in General Medicine in the School of Rural Medicine. His teaching responsibilities include teaching medicine at the Tablelands Clinical School to 4th and 5th year students enrolled in the JMP. Dr Hadi is also a Conjoint Senior Lecturer. School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle.

While enjoying living locally in New England, he has an interest in medical humanities and philosophy of medicine. Hadi has a passion for Persian Film, is one of the founding members of Honar Andishi which is a monthly literary and film study meeting in Sydney, instrumental in developing the Persian Film Festival.

Dr Katharine Bate - Adult Cardiologist & Electrophysiology Fellow

Dr Katharine Bate

Dr Katharine Bate is a cardiologist and an emerging clinical academic with special interest in heart rhythm disorders and exercise as therapy for heart disease. Dr Bate completed both her physician and advanced cardiology training programs at Royal North Shore Hospital and has just completed an additional post-graduate sub-specialty training in electrophysiology and pacing. 

During Dr Bate's specialist training, she completed her PhD at the University of Sydney, studying the ways that atherosclerosis alters the immune system and determining how this could be used to develop biomarkers for early disease detection. Dr Bate won multiple prizes during her doctorate, including the Peter Bancroft Prize for submitting a thesis that was accepted without corrections, and continues to work with her research colleagues in the Cardiovascular Discovery Group at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, led by Professor Gemma Figtree. Dr Bate's publications can be viewed here. Dr Bate also has an ongoing interest in medical education and is the current Course Co-Convenor for Cardiology in the Master of Medicine program at the University of Sydney. 

Dr Bate originally comes from Vancouver, but after completing medical training in Australia she couldn't help but settle in Northern Sydney with her young family. Outside of medicine she is an enthusiastic amateur chef and bonsai gardener, and enjoys keeping fit with the family by exploring Sydney's natural beauty.
